Don Chaney is a former NBA player and coach whose career spanned over 36 years. Years after his retirement from basketball, Don started experiencing frequent heart-related symptoms, including fatigue, palpitations, and shortness of breath, but his doctors could not immediately determine the underlying cause. In 2019, he was finally diagnosed with hereditary ATTR-CM – a rare, life-threatening heart condition that is associated with heart failure and is passed down from a relative due to a genetic mutation. The gene mutation Don has is found almost exclusively in African Americans. Don is now working with Pfizer Rare Disease to share his personal experience and help raise awareness of this underrecognized disease in the Black/African American community.
